Welcome to the first week of school for the 2008-09 School Year!

School volunteers are extra-special people who are committed to making schools the best they can be. They offer special attention and caring that can inspire students to reach for and realize their dreams.

This program is a component of the ADDitions program. School volunteers work at the schools of their choice and participate in activities that match their interests, such as assisting teachers in the classroom, designing bulletin boards, working with students, serving as computer tutors, working with art classes, or helping out in the office or media center.

If you are interested in joining the ADDitions program here at Lake Gem Elementary, please fill out our online application or speak to our ADDitions Coordinator, Ms. Carol Rossi at (407) 532-7900.

New FCAT Prep Program
StudyIsland.com

Study Island logoWe are excited to announce that Lake Gem has purchased a new program for our students in grades 2-5. It is an FCAT preparation and practice program called Study Island. The program allows students to improve their test performance on the math and reading portions of the FCAT through practice questions on the benchmarks that they are being taught. Fifth grade students may also access the science portion of test practice. Study Island is web-based so students may use it in the instructional labs at school, in the Media Center on Monday evenings, at home, or anywhere they have access to an internet connection.

The program allows for immediate feedback as to whether a question was answered correctly. It gives students the opportunity to learn at their own pace.  The work is both in test form or interactive games. Printable worksheets are also available to provide additional practice.

Teachers will provide each student in grades 2-5 with their username and password by Monday, August 25, 2008.
