WELCOME TO PRE-K!
What an exciting time this is … your child’s first school experience! We are so glad that you’ve choosen to share this with us. This year we will be helping your child develop the prerequisite skills to be successful in school. We will do this by promoting good listening skills, teaching finger play and rhymes, building familiarity with print materials, and through reading a variety of stories and poems aloud.
One of most important skills we work on in Pre-K is language and communication development. This includes skills such as: Listening, Speaking, Vocabulary (knowing the names for objects), Sentences and Structure (being able to ask questions and give answers using complete sentences) and Conversation Skills. At school we will be working on this by reading concept-related books and engaging the children in conversations related to our units. What can you do at home? Ask your child about their day and what they did. Read stories to them and ask who, what, where, when and why questions. Talking with them whenever and wherever is the best way to build their language and communication skills.
Throughout the year we will study several different themes. Our 1st theme is I’m Special! In this unit your child will explore the ways that people are alike and what makes each person special. Encourage your child to share the finger plays and songs he/she is learning at school and to retell the stores we’ve learned. |
